My main goal with Forma has always been simple: to help photographers like myself make their best work. It isn’t about adding another piece of gear for the sake of it — it’s about making the process of seeing, exploring and choosing a composition easier, so more of our attention can stay on the photograph itself.
One of the things I most wanted to see when I started sending Forma out was how other photographers would actually use it in the field.
Photographer Lee Pengelly recently took Forma along on an 8×10 outing while photographing a ruined church in the UK. Rather than simply talking about Forma, Lee incorporated it naturally into his normal large-format workflow — exactly the way I hoped photographers would use it.
For me, this is what Forma is really about: exploring a scene, checking framing and comparing compositions before committing to setting up a large-format camera. It keeps the process quick and intuitive while letting you stay engaged with what’s actually in front of you.
Seeing Forma go from a rough concept a year ago to something another photographer is now using as part of their own process is incredibly rewarding.
